Scott Metzger and Peter Staats met in 1991.  Metzger was a medical student at Boston University, visiting Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where Staats was a resident.  Metzger later had his own residency at Johns Hopkins, studying under Dr. Staats, who founded the University’s Division of Pain Management.

Dr. Staats concentrated his energies on teaching, research and the development of new pain management procedures, as well as writing or co-editing books, chapters, articles and abstracts on the subject.  Dr. Metzger returned to his native New Jersey with the goal of giving back to his community, starting his own practice in 2000.  Dr. Staats received world-wide recognition for his work, being cited by his peers, professional and consumer publications as one of the best pain management doctors in the country.  Dr. Metzger’s local practice thrived, and he looked to expand it further.  In 2004, the two physicians combined their strengths and talents, creating Metzger Staats, a world-class pain management center that attracts patients internationally.
